On 21 March 2025, Hubert Fichte would have turned 90. On the occasion of his 90th birthday, the State and University Library Carl von Ossietzky in Hamburg, which administers almost the entire estate of Hubert Fichte, is offering me the opportunity to do an exhibition on him.
Happy Birthday Hubert Fichte!

Who was Hubert Fichte?
Born on March 21st, 1935, in Peleberg, Brandenburg; died March 8th, 1986, in Hamburg. He was classified as a ‘first-degree Jewish half-breed’ under the Nazi laws. Already as a child, he acted at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus, Thalia Theatre and the Hamburg Kammerspiele.
He was a writer of novels, essays, travelogues, diaries, ethnological and ethno-poetic texts, features, radio plays and photographic films. A forerunner of pop literature, a pioneer of queer studies and postcolonial research. A gay man with his partner, the photographer Leonore Mau. In his books, he is Jacki and she is Irma. His homosexuality was a central aspect of his work. Like Jean Genet, he rebelled against social and literary norms.
